Vogue India curates its first ever runway show at Amazon India Fashion Week 2017. The renowned magazine in its 10th year celebrated the decade of fashion in India. A special show titled ‘Saree 27/7’ was featured, showcasing the works of 60 leading designers. So its official now – the love for sarees has well crossed the boundaries of South East Asia to go global. Fashion director Anaita Shroff Adajania described the concept behind the initiative as “Each of the leading India’s best designers creating one-of-a-kind sarees and going with the mood of what the saree means to them. What we are really celebrating is the democracy of the saree today.” Absolutely true, isn’t it?
Saree has crossed the threshold of its conventional patterns to emerge as a fusion wear today. It was well evident in the showcase of sarees in this event. Dhruv Kapoor’s skirt saree with a corset, Huemn’s parka – inspired silhouette and Rajesh Pratap Singh’s hooded and gloved saree were sure-fire firsts. At Sujatra, we were more than just happy to witness the way to celebrate the milestone by empowering our country’s strongest style staple?
Vogue’s ‘Saree 24/7’, a collection featuring different versions of the nine yard favourite saw the elite of the fashion hub. Fifty of India’s most prolific labels including Manish Malhotra, Raw Mango, Abraham and Thakore, Rahul Mishra, Suneet Verma, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla came together to give a larger than life picture to the most celebrated Indian garment of all times. Unique drapes, handloom weaves, party ready versions and cool girl casuals were all part of this fashion extravaganza. As Vogue India editor, Priya Tanna puts it, “Vogue India has always celebrated the best of fashion, and for us, that begins with the most symbolic and timeless piece of clothing, the sarees.”
All in all, it was a milestone event that bought together the best designers of India to put the spotlight on our favourite garment. As Vogue India, the bible of fashion celebrates sarees, we at Sujatra contribute to the same fervour with our initiative of producing unmatched elegance of traditional drapes. Come on India, let’s dance to the music of saree!!
